What Is the Big Picture of Education?

Education is America’s biggest industry, with an estimated $1 trillion spent per year. Yet we have the strange situation that no one person or organization is qualified at the present time to present the big picture to the public or to educators.

The reason is simple - education is so complex that no one person can see the big picture, and there is no permanent specialized SM-14 type national research center devoted to this purpose.

So what we have is endless arguments about change, disaster after disaster, impractical national programs, unreliable educational research, inadequate yearly improvement, and blundering by our top educators.

When will the public, which is disgusted with education, demand a permanent research center devoted to presenting the big picture of education?

In the meantime, our students, teachers, parents, schools, and society suffer the consequences.
