Your help is needed to improve education. You may remember me as the founder and head of Edmund Scientific Co. After my retirement, I spent a few years boating and fishing. Then I began to do some specialized research into the scientific method, our education system, and related areas. I have now spent more than 15 years and more than $1 million of my personal funds on this project. The more I researched, the more worried I became. I tried to convince educators and others to use and teach the scientific method. I had no success. In desperation, I spent 5 years writing a book, End the Biggest Educational and Intellectual Blunder in History (2005). It is a plea to the public to get educational researchers and others started using the scientific method (I call my formula SM-14) in all areas and endeavors. The scientific method is, among other things, the complete method of creative problem solving and decision making for all fields. It is insupportable that educational researchers, other social scientists, and top leaders do not use. Our educational system is in need of serious and practical improvement.
The ills of education are often blamed on our “bad teachers” and “bad schools.” The real fault lies with our top educators and educational researchers, who have introduced many fads and impractical programs claimed to “reform education.”
There are thousands of things that have to be done to improve education, but here are two basic things that must be done:
1. Require top leaders and educational researchers to use the scientific method - the greatest quality control method ever recognized. At present, we waste billions of taxpayers’ money spent on education because educational researchers are not held to the same high standards as scientists in spending government grant money.
2. Properly accumulate reliable information. Establish permanent specialized SM-14 type research centers on a variety of the most important problems. At present, chaos prevails. Everyone is pushing their personal solutions, and educators and teachers are not guided and educated properly on what is best.
