AAAS Celebrates 20 Years of Project 2061 Efforts to Reform Science Teaching

But still doesn’t recognize the scientific method.

Project 2061 has been financed by grants from the National Science Foundation and a few other foundations. It recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gathering of congressmen and project participants.

Project 2061 was started by Dr. F. James Rutherford, a former Harvard professor, and has never included teaching what science is - the scientific method. In 1992 I tried to have AAAS review the misunderstandings about the scientific method, but I was unsuccessful. Thus, millions of taxpayer dollars continue to be wasted in the name of improving science teaching. Actually, great harm is done instead.

I have been a member of AAAS for a total of more than 35 years, and it does a great job promoting science, but it blundered badly in Project 2061 and in failing to investigate my claims about the misunderstandings about the scientific method. This contributes to the current problem of public officials correctly defining “scientifically valid research,” now required to be used by education researchers.
